Symphony inaugurates its handset manufacturing industry in Ashulia

Symphony inaugurated their newly-established manufacturing plant, “Edison Industries Limited” at Zirabo, Ashulia on the 23rd of September. The ceremony was commenced by Honorable Minister Mr. Mustafa Jabbar, Ministry of Post, Telecommunication & Information Technology. The top officials of Symphony, including the Chairman of Edison Group, Mr. Aminur Rashid, Managing Director, Mr. Jakaria Shahid and Director of Edison Industries, Mr. S M Morshed-Uz-Zaman were also present at the program.

Minister Mr. Mustafa Jabbar stated “This achievement has added a new milestone in the digitization of Bangladesh. Our prime minister’s long desired dream of seeing local manufacturing of mobile handsets have been successfully turned into reality by Symphony, I thank them for that”. Mr. Jabbar also said that Symphony is committed to manufacturing high quality handsets. They have maintained all guidelines set by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and were permitted to begin local handset manufacture after proving their technological-readiness and determination to go ahead. Now, it’s our responsibility to make sure that their journey to progress is smooth and swift. He also said that the device industry has great potential in our country. Previously we had to depend entirely on foreign brands. The establishment of Symphony’s manufacturing industry will greatly lessen that dependence, thereby developing the local handset manufacturing industry altogether.

Managing Director Mr. Jakaria Shahid said “After receiving permission of setting up ‘A’ category industry, we are now focusing all our energy here so that we can produce handsets of international standards and in doing so, contribute greatly behind realizing the dreams of a digital Bangladesh.

Mr. Mustafa Jabbar and the others looked around the production line, Research & Development wing, quality control and testing lab in the factory. According to Symphony, Edison Industries Limited has been constructed on a massive 57,000 square foot space. Japanese and German machineries have been installed in the facility. Approximately 400-500 new workplaces have been created here. Initially, 30-40 lakh unit of smartphones is planned to be produced from 8 production lines. More of these lines are planned to be added in the future.

The director of Edison Industries, Mr. S M Morshed-Uz-Zaman informed that 80% of all workers have been hired from polytechnic institutes and were rigorously trained for months before placement. He also said that the people in charge of the operations have been trained from different local and foreign institutions and organizations. To uphold Edison group’s values of equal employment opportunity, a significant number of female personnel are also engaged at Edison Industries Ltd and there are plans of increasing this number gradually over the coming days.
